1964 Standard Questar 3.5" Maksutov Cassegrain Telescope
3,395.00 €
What some consider the “sweet spot” classic period of Questar design, this example was produced in 1964 (#4-2141). The kit appears to be fully correct for the period, with correct badging and the small and stout rear axial port plug. Absent are an original lens cap (a threaded metal one is provided) and the finder solar filter, which is believed not to have been provided and is available from the factory as an easy add-on. Off axis solar filter is present as is stop-down ring (Caution: having a solar filter without a finder filter is risky if careless or uniformed users will have access to the scope). Both eyepieces are present and in excellent condition. Legs and original AC cord are included.
The moon map and dew shield are the ideal purple color of this era. The dew shield has some minor scratches that are not apparent except under great scrutiny. The photographs give the correct impression. The polished surfaces are bright, with several minor scratches on the base flange that are depicted. The handsome original English leather case shows significant wear at the hinge and some edges, and some separation at the upper edge of the hinge. The handle is solid, and the case appears trustworthy for carrying, even as it may be fragile for more demanding transport needs.
The optics are superlative, meeting typical Questar standards. The mirror and corrector have been recoated in 2020 by Cumberland (Questar’s long-time optics supplier). Star tests presently display a beautiful Airy disc, and the scope also performs beautifully on terrestrial, lunar, planetary and nebular subjects. All mechanical and electrical actions operate smoothly and properly, and the finder is collimated and focus shift appears within Questar specs.
Item condition: used, but with visible cosmetic markings
