ASA DDM100 Mount
The evolution of mounts
The DDM100 ASA´s smallest telescope mount
ASA Direct Drive technology with absolute encoders for high end applications
New design based on 15 years of experience with Direct Drive systems.
Ready for the most demanding situations in pointing and tracking performance Load capacity of 100kg/220lbs on a polar wedge.
To achieve the excellent tracking and pointing performance ASA Direct Drive systems are equipped with high resolution up to 28bit (0.004 arcsec) encoders on each axis.
After modelling the pointing with the ASA software package, the positioning error is usually better than 5 arcsec RMS, the tracking performance is in the range of +/- 0.25 arcsec up to 10min (only guaranteed with ASA telescopes).
The ASA DDM100 is the entry into all kinds of research work, including astronomical observation and satellite tracking.
ASA leaves no stone unturned when it comes to electronics design.
Our closed loop direct drive systems, sensor technology and observatory safety modules play a major role in achieving optimum results.
All moving accessory components are equipped with high-resolution encoders and closed-loop feedback systems.
We provide event timer modules, and customer updatable firmware.

ASA Direct Drive Technology
NO gears NO belts. Precise closed loop control.
In professional astronomy direct drive technology has been used for some years now. We developed our own direct drive controller and motor system. No gears or belts are needed, there is no transmission no periodic error or backlash.
Direct drive means
- Fast acceleration - necessary for satellite tracking
- very stable and stiff
- precise pointing and tracking
- longer life expectancies because there is no wear & tear (since no moving parts)
- low to no-sound operation
- low power consumption
The power is not wasted in friction (from the belt, chain, etc., and especially, gearboxes.)
Being a simpler device, a direct-drive mechanism has fewer parts which could vibrate, and the overall noise emission of the system is usually lower.
Having fewer moving parts also means having fewer parts prone to failure.
Faster and precise positioning:
High torque and low inertia allows faster positioning with permanent magnet synchronous servo drives.
Mechanical backlash, hysteresis and elasticity is removed by avoiding the use of gearboxes
High torque at low rpm.
All ASA mounts have high precision absolute encoders on all axes.
