ATIK 4000C Color - Single-Shot Camera with 23mm Chip Diagonal - 4 Mega Pixel Chip
The ATIK 4000C incorporates a 4 megapixel Kodak sensor with 7.4 µm
pixels, which provides an ideal introduction to the joys of
large-format imaging, being much bigger than the Sony sensors which arte
typically used for astronomy. At 16 x 16 mm, the sensor array is a
perfect fit for standard 1 1/4" filters, offering a considerable saving
over the 2" filters required by anything larger. Resolution from the
ATIK 4000C is fine enough for printing at A4 or even A3 size, and when
viewing images on a computer monitor it is a pleasure to see details
emerging at ever-deeper zoom levels.The advantages of the ATIK 4000 C compared with a DSLR camera:
Compared with the chips of an DSLR which is adjusted for normal daylight photography the Kodak KAI 04022 has a much higher sensitivity. With this chip you will have a shorter exposure time and much more details. Especially in the blue and read this chip is much more sensitive.
A further advantage is the low sensitivity at sodium wavelength. Artifical light is mostly very strong at this wavelength but for deep sky photography you don´t need it. The result is a higher signal - noise ratio at long time exposures compared with DSLR cameras.
An important difference is the peltier cooling which the DSLR don´t have. At DSLR you will have very high noise after a few minutes - with the cooled ATIK cameras you won´t have it. With darkframes than you can additionally reduce this noise and you only need one darkframe here. With DSLR cameras each image needs directly it´s own darkframe and so you looses exposure time over the night.The most important advantages of the ATIK 4000C:

Kodak sensor KAI 04022 has proven for astronomical usage. The producer
said this Kodak chips in this size for astro photography have a better
performance than similar Sony chips.The usage of the ATIK filter wheel for 1 1/4" filter:
ATIK filter wheel will be screwed directly onto the camera. The
distance from the T2 thread to the filter is 13 mm. So this filter wheel
is build very short. Because its possible to adjust the orientation of
the camera to the wheel you have a reserve of additional 5 mm.
So you will have a distance from the chip of the camera to the filter of
30 mm (including a little bit reserve). For a 100% illumination at f/6
the lightcone will measure at this distance 25.5 mm. So you will get a
fully illuminated frame with telescopes of f/6 or slower.
At f/5 it´s also possibel. The light cone in 30 mm distance measures
with full illumination 26.5 mm. If you don´t use the rotation function
you will get additional 5 mm and the ligthcone will only have 25 mm. So
you can also get here a fully illumination.Some more details:
ATIK 4000C has the Kokak KAI 04022 sensor which has a much greater
full-well-capacitiy than comparable chips like the Sony one. An other
advantage is the square ATIK sensor, it uses the field of the telescope
much besser. Only a few telescopes can fully illuminate a DX-sensor
wihout costly correctors.
A very important feature of the ATIK 4000C is the heatable cover
glass. Unlike other cameras at low sensor temperature and high humidity
